What is 5-HTP?
5-Hydroxytryptophan, otherwise known as 5-HTP, is a chemical precursor, a naturally occurring amino acid and a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of serotonin, a neurotransmitter. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that is linked with the part of the brain, which is responsible for the feeling of happiness. It is usually produced from the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia, an African plant, and can be used for a vast range of disorders.
How does it work?
Low levels of serotonin in the brain is often linked with low mood and other mental health issues. 5-HTP is often used as a supplement by many people to better their immune system as well as their mental health. The main role of 5-HTP is as a building block to serotonin. Serotonin is the precursor to Melatonin, the body’s natural sleep hormone. Melatonin is an immune system booster, anti-inflammatory and a potent antioxidant and is specifically protective of the brain. Melatonin plays a role in controlling your circadian rhythms. Moreover, melatonin also works ideally as a natural antidepressant. In young adults who suffer from Low mood, anxiety or stress, 6-week supplementation of 5-HTP can result in reduced symptoms by significantly increasing serotonin levels as well as serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels.
